A lot of celebrities have been termed as Millennials and famous talk host shows are talking about the Millennial era. But what is it and how it all started or are you also a millennial? Let’s find out!
What does it mean?
Millennial, also known as the generation Y, it’s nothing else but people born in between the early 1980s and early 2000. So, basically, if you are between the age of 13-30, chances are you are also a millennial.
Also, referred to as Echo Boomers, don’t get confused. In the early 80’s and 90’s, there was a spike in the births, that’s when Baby Boomers started having families.
It’s not a bad thing to be a part of the Millennial family. It’s definitely not an attitude thing or a personality trait, it’s how you are raised, around an environment.
Characteristics of Millennial
It is believed that every generation has some common traits between them and it’s absolutely true.
Millennials are more civic-minded people with a strong sense of community both local and global which is a good trait.
Millennials have seven basic traits:
- They are special,
- Pressured, and
With all these basic traits studies have shown an increase in narcissism in Gen Y, which is a matter of high concern for the well-being of our surrounding society.
How did Millennials get their name?
The credit for coining this term has been mostly given to Neil Howe and the late William Strauss, who first used the term in the mid-90s and wrote Millennials rising in 2000.
It was an outgrowth of work they had done for a book called Generations, which was among the first to explore the idea that groups share qualities such as beliefs, attitudes, values, and behaviors because of the time period when they grew up.
There is a lot of debate going around the benefits and con’s of being a Millennial but we guess it does not matter in each era you were born, though it shapes your opinion, at the end of the day a person reflects his or her inner self.
